As you all probably know our potty training has been failing miserable. At the beginning of December Bob also took a step back in the dummy department too.

For a long time she has only needed her dummy when she has been sleeping and, as you also probably know, this isn’t very often. She started wanted it more often and would cry and ask for her ‘Dim dim’ throughout the day. (Don’t ask where the name dim dim came from, I have no idea!)

I told Bob that if Father Christmas came and she had a dummy and was wearing a nappy he may think she was a baby and leave her bottles and rattles instead of toys. Mean mummy! I said that it might be a good idea to try to either use the potty or get rid of her dummy before Christmas. Bob didn’t seem too keen on either idea.

Then, one week before Christmas, it was time for Bob to go to bed. I found 2 dummies and they were both damaged. (She likes to bite them.) I showed them to Bob and told her that they would have to go in the bin. She seemed a bit upset about this but she went to bed and settled quite quickly. She asked for her ‘dim dim’ occasionally but she seemed to accept the fact that they were broken and they had been thrown away.

Whilst she was asleep I found another dummy. I hid it as I thought the main problem with giving up the dummy would be Bob being able to go to sleep without it. She had already managed to do this so it seemed a shame to give up. She slept very well that night, better than usual.

The next morning Bob woke up asking for her ‘dim dim’. When I reminded her that they were broken she got very upset. We went downstairs and Bob continued to miss her dummy.

I thought that she might need some extra encouragement to forget about her dummy so I distracted Bob and put a bag of chocolate coins on the Christmas tree. We then went to turn the tree lights and made the discovery. There was a little note attached to the coins. This was the ingredients tag as I didn’t have much time but luckily Bob can’t read yet. The note was from Father Christmas and it congratulated Bob for being such a big girl and told her that he would bring her some wonderful big girl toys on Christmas Eve.

Bob was really happy with her coins and told everyone that she met about them. She still asked about her ‘dim dim’ throughout the day and got upset a couple if times but it was nothing that a chocolate coin couldn’t fix. It took her about a week to forget about her dummy and at times I was tempted to give the hidden one to her but we persevered and the ‘dim dim’ is history!

Well done Bob!

Great! I wish I could say the same for my wee man still using his for bed times. He does not use it throughout the day at least which is some comfort. I have tried saying many things with little success and I am hoping that soon he will just not need it!
