If you have read my previous post you will know that we struggled to get Bow to take a bottle. I had been sent some Dr. Brown’s bottles, which my health visitor said were the best bottles to prevent colic, and I worried I would be unable to review them.
Eventually, after trying many types of bottles and resorting to feeding Bow with my boob on his head, we managed to get him feeding from a bottle and fortunately it was the Dr. Brown’s bottles that won!
We now won’t use anything else. Bow is even more settled using these bottles than he was when he was breastfeeding! He does get wind but he parts with it straight away when he finishes a feed. When I was feeding he would often pull off, screaming in pain as the wind was too much for him.
I love Dr. Brown’s bottles, the only thing that I didn’t like was the fact that they leaked. I looked online to see if there was anything that could be done to prevent this and I realised the reason behind it and ways to stop it happening.
The bottles contain a vent which stops a baby having to fight against the vacuum found in other bottles. The vent can cause the bottles to leak when you shake them or if the milk is overheated. To prevent this Dr. Brown’s advise that you take care not to overheat the milk and you stir rather than shake.
We have been using a prep machine and you need to shake the bottle to ensure that the boiling water removes the bacteria from the formula powder. At first I thought I would have to change which bottles we were using because Dr. Brown’s bottles leaked but I was very reluctant to do this because Bow was doing so well on them. When I realised my friend was using the same bottles and the same machine, I asked her how she managed the leaking. She told me about some Dr Brown’s travel caps. We bought some of these and we have never looked back! The are the perfect solution and they make shaking the bottle leak free. These caps have meant that we can keep using these excellent bottles.
Disclaimer: We were sent a Dr. Brown’s starter kit in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I love Dr. Brown’s bottles. My wife and I used to use Philip’s Avent, but we switched to Dr. Brown’s at the suggestion of a family member. And we have never looked back. The bottles really do help with air intake. It’s awesome!
