If I am honest, we are terrible in our house when it comes to saving energy. The television is always on standby and lights are on in many rooms when they don’t need to be.
I have always been terrible at turning lights off. My parents thought that Belinda Carlisle song,’Darling leave a light on for me,’ was written about me. 🙂 My husband is just as bad if not worse.
A quarter of the average energy consumption in a household in the UK is taken up by lighting. I think that we could be responsible for most of that.
We have realised that we need to change our ways. Not only to save money but also to cut down on emissions and reduce our carbon footprint.
Lucky for us there is help at hand. Thankfully E.ON, one of the UK’s leading energy providers, recognises how important it is for it’s customers to be able to work out how much energy they use so that they can identify opportunities for them to make savings in the easiest ways.
They have developed an Energy Saving Toolkit which includes an energy comparison tool. Customers can register online to access the Energy Saving profiling tool. The tool helps you to discover how to reduce energy use by comparing how much energy you use with similar homes in your area.
We are starting to change our ways. We have recently had a log fire fitted. This provides a lot of heat and means that the central heating doesn’t have to running on full power constantly.
We are also trying to remember to turn the lights off and not leave appliances on standby. As I write this I am conscious that the kitchen light is on and nobody is in there! Oh dear!
These changes will take some getting used to as we have 30 years of bad habits to break but it will be worth it!
It will also be good for Bob to learn about saving energy as she grows up. I want her to have good habits and the best way to do that is to lead by example.
Wish us luck! I am off to turn off the lights!
