I feel very fortunate about the places that I have worked. The majority of my jobs have been in nurseries and schools which were great to work in. When I was younger I had various jobs in shops and pubs and I have never had a problem with any of those either. Apparently this is not the case for many people in the U.K.
After reading an infographic (which I have attached at the end of this post) I was shocked to discover that ‘21 million people claim their workplace is a hazard’.
I have worked from home since Bob was a baby. I sometimes miss going out to work and seeing other grown ups but I am starting to think that it would be much safer to stay where I am.
I am not saying my job is without hazards. I have to work around a 1 year old, which has many of it’s own problems. I am planning to turn our spare room into an office to give me a space to work in when Michael is home. At the moment I work where and when I can. This is usually with the laptop on my knee whilst making sure Bow isn’t climbing, falling or sticking his fingers in the DVD player. Bow also likes to ‘help’ me to type. This usually involves him pulling at the laptop whilst I try to stop it tumbling to the floor or falling on his toes.
I also have to carry out a health and safety check before I attempt to start work. Bob is now 5 and although I have found many pros to a 4 year age gap there are also some cons. Bob is at the age where she loves toys that are small and plastic. Shopkins, Tsum Tsums and Lego are some of her favourites. At the same time, Bow is at the age where he loves to put small plastic things in his mouth. Before I sit down with the laptop I have to ensure that the room is free of any small plastic toys. I also have to fill the room with lots of fun things for Bow to find and make sure that CBeebies is on the television. This may give me half an hour if I am very lucky!
That said I do think that working from home is much safer after reading the infographic below.
The research was commissioned following the launch of the personal injury solicitor’s new interactive injury compensation calculator.

So awesome that you get to work from home and I definitely know the pain of looking for every single small toy you can before the youngest pops it in his mouth!!!
Woweee! That’s a shocking infographic! My mummy wishes she could work from home x
I worked from home for many years but have to admit I get more productive work done when away from home as its so easy to grab a cuppa and get caught up with whats on Tv
I am easily distracted at home too. I’m hoping my plan of an office will help this as I can shut myself away and pretend I’m at work. x
Working from home definitely has many advantages. I am quite shocked at the number of hazards that are faced by people in their places of work, thanks for sharing this infographic x
I would love to work form home, but have to say I do enjoy working in an office as well x
A part of me loves working from home, another part of me hates it. It comes with so many challenges but then, think of all the benefits and I wouldn’t change it!
I work from home and love it as I can work around my children. I miss the interaction with others but enjoy not having to answer to or rely much on anyone else. Glad I do now I’ve seen this x
I’ve been working mostly from home for the past many many years. It really is very different from being in an office environment, but it has its benefits indeed.
When I work from home, I used to think it would be a great way to get things done, in reality I dont get as much done as I think I am going too!
Didn’t really think about lack of safety in work as never had a workplace injury but find bigger companies the worst for keeping to thinks. I’ve worked at big retailers who ignore rules on hours staff should be allowed to work for appropriate rest period, staff not following safety concerns and even some managers ignoring engineers/people fixing things who say things need to be pulled out and start over! X
I can’t believe the risks some people are prepared to take! Shocked that they wouldn’t listen to the experts! x
