Bob loves sticker books and I love educational activities so when I was asked if we would like to review Miles Kelly’s new range of fairytale phonics sticker books I couldn’t wait to share them with Bob.
There are 8 titles in this series. We were sent Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears and Puss in Boots.
The books are beautifully illustrated and the story has been written to emphasise certain sounds. As I read the story Bob had to listen out for the sounds. The books also contain various activities, some of which used stickers.
I got very excited when I realised the stickers were perforated. I always rip the stickers out of sticker books to make it easier for Bob and I have lost count of the amount of times I have ripped the stickers. The perforations make these stickers very easy to remove.
Bob really enjoyed these books but she needed support to complete some of the activities. She was very good at finding the items that began with a certain sound but she needed help sounding out the words as she isn’t able to recognise all of the sounds. She did very well to say she hasn’t even started school yet.
At the end of each page the child gets to award themselves a star sticker. Bob loved this part.
I think that these books would be perfect for children during the second half of reception and throughout year 1 because they also include adjacent consonants and digraphs (2 letters that make one sound).
Although Bob was a bit young for these books I think she learnt a lot as we worked through them together. Some sounds that I know she couldn’t recognise before we started the books she could recognise after. I was very impressed that she could recognise the ‘w’ sound after the sticker activity in Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.
Bob and I enjoy working on these books together and I know she will get more out of them as she learns more of her sounds. The stickers are reusable which means we will be able to revisit the books at a later date. I can’t wait to see how she progresses.
Miles Kelly are running a huge #GiveABook campaign where you can win books for your friends and family. They want to give away 600 children’s books over the summer holidays, 100 every week, to help kids to keep reading over the long break.
To take part, all you have to do is visit their website, choose a book you want to give and nominate the child you wish to receive it. 100 winners will be chosen at random each week.
Disclaimer: We were sent the books free of charge for the purpose of this review but all opinions are our own.
